Dedicated server management: managed, self-managed, and what each costs

A dedicated server is a whole machine, and someone has to run it: patch the operating system, watch the disks, respond when it stops answering at night. Hosts sell that work as management, and the same box can cost double with it. This page sets out what management includes, when self-managed is safe, and how the printed prices compare, using the verified table and each host's own dedicated and VPS pages.

Deciding how much management to buy

  1. List who will answer the pager. If a person on your side can restore a failed disk, patch a kernel and read logs at 3am, self-managed is an option. If not, the host's management is not a luxury; it is the only plan under which the server has an operator.
  2. Read the management tiers on the host's page. Hosts sell several: core (hardware and network only), managed (operating system, patching, monitoring, control panel), and fully managed (the above plus application-level help and proactive fixes). Each host's dedicated page, linked from its profile, states its tiers; the index quotes the printed price of the flagship stack and points at the page for the rest.
  3. Compare a managed VPS before a dedicated box. For most workloads under a few hundred thousand visits a month, a managed VPS from the VPS stack page carries the load at a fraction of a dedicated server's price and includes the management. Dedicated is for workloads that need the whole machine: databases with heavy I/O, compliance that forbids shared hardware, software licensed per physical server.
  4. Price the term honestly. Dedicated servers are mostly monthly with a setup fee or an intro discount; VPS plans at the specialists are monthly with short promotions; the shared-hosting style 36-month intro is rare here. The table's term column shows what each printed price requires.

What fully managed actually includes

Operating system installation and patching, security hardening, monitoring with a human response, backups with restore, control panel administration and, at the top tiers, help with the application stack itself. It does not include developing your application, and it rarely includes managing software the host did not install. The host's own page draws the line; read it before comparing prices.

Self-managed means the host replaces failed hardware and keeps the network up, and everything above the operating system is yours. It is the right purchase for a team that runs servers already and the wrong one for everyone else.

Dedicated versus VPS in the index

The hosts evidenced for the dedicated stack are the same hosts that sell managed VPS plans, and their VPS entry prices are in the table. A managed VPS at the printed price with the same management tier is the honest comparison for a dedicated server at ten times the figure; the dedicated purchase has to be justified by the workload, not by the word.

Common questions

What does dedicated server management include?
At the fully managed tier: operating system patching, security, monitoring with a human response, backups and control panel administration; at lower tiers less. Each host's dedicated page, linked from its profile, states its tiers.
Should I buy a managed or self-managed dedicated server?
Managed unless someone on your side already runs servers and will answer the pager. A self-managed server with no operator is a liability, not a saving.
Is a dedicated server cheaper than a VPS?
No. A managed VPS from the table costs a fraction of a dedicated server and carries most workloads; dedicated is for workloads that need the whole machine.
